ABOUT ADELAIDE FESTIVAL

“When the Adelaide Festival in 2012 went from being a biennial event to one that happens every March, this writer was among those who feared something special had been lost. The whole point was that the festival came around only every other year, and was reason for out-of-towners to make a special pilgrimage to Adelaide. If I still had any of those reservations, Neil Armfield and Rachel Healy, co-directors in Adelaide since 2017, have thoroughly banished them. The Adelaide Festival can’t come around soon enough. Their sophisticated, aspirational programming, their deep immersion in Australia’s cultural life and  understanding of their constituent audience has made the festival one of the vital conduits for Australia’s conversation with the wider world of performing arts.”
(The Australian)

We welcome you to Adelaide Festival 2020.

We have scoured the globe for works of great scale and delicate, human intimacy. Works that engage the heart and the mind, that suggest ways forward for both the art form and the species.

Because that, after all, is what art can do.

Through art, through story, we play in the unconscious. We rehearse alternatives. We enact ceremony by which, through pattern and rhythm, image and sound, our imagination is released and with it the fundamental power of empathy.

There is so much in our world that is dysfunctional and broken. Where our social systems are failing and we search for solutions to a future that narrows before us. Art not only gives us respite, pleasure and joy, it gives us the unexpected gift of reimagining. It provides tools for the future. It enables us to rebuild.

These are ancient truths.

One of the core works of 2020, 150 Psalms, a massive choral project, takes thousand year old texts of consolation and contemplation as anthems for our world – this performance, like so many in the pages of this book, will wrap its arms around our city and hold us tight in wonder and awe.

Around the world we are asked what makes the Adelaide Festival so special. Because its reputation precedes us. It’s known as one of those festivals that set the standard. And we say that for those 17 days in March the weather is glorious and there is a buzz and a palpable ambition that you can taste in the air around you. The whole city is alive with hope and pleasure and possibility.

And in 2020 it is our 35th Adelaide Festival, and we celebrate all 60 years of its beautiful life.

Come and join us as we play and think and dance and sing this March.

ABOUT ADELAIDE WRITERS' WEEK

“A marvellously free six-day event in a shady spot on the edge of the Torrens River.”
(Sydney Morning Herald)

Adelaide Writers’ Week is Australia’s largest free literary festival, offering both writers and readers a unique opportunity to spend time sharing ideas and literary explorations in a garden setting in Adelaide’s city centre. Each carefully selected program brings the world's most celebrated established and emerging writers together for a week that delights, surprises and enlightens audiences.

Each Adelaide Writers’ Week includes six days of free panel sessions that are presented live in the gardens, and made available online via podcast. The program also features a series of ticketed special events throughout the year, and the popular free Kids’ Weekend, which attracts hundreds of families for fun and engaging literary adventures. The directorship of Jo Dyer, in 2019, kept the traditional appointments but added some new (and very well welcomed) events, including the Middle and Young Adults day and the Twilight Talks.

Over the years, Adelaide Writers’ Week has seen some of the world’s greatest writers and thinkers in conversation about literature, politics, poetry, current events, biography, the short story and much, much more.

The Chairman’s Circle is a unique group of leading Adelaide Festival supporters whose influence, vision and direct engagement has an immediate and measurable impact on the Festival’s program each year.

As a collective, the Chairman’s Circle annual investment directly supports one prestigious work in the Festival program which is exclusive to the Adelaide Festival. These sponsored awarding-winning works include The James Plays, Saul, Hamlet, The Magic Flute and Requiem.

Members receive premium seating and hospitality on the opening night of this exclusive production.

The Chairman’s Circle enjoys a close relationship with the Chair and other members of the Board, as leading supporters of and advocates for the Adelaide Festival.

Members of the Chairman’s Circle make an annual investment of $10,000, of which $8,000 is a tax-deductible donation. Chairman's Circle members receive exclusive benefits to the value of $2000 with the balance of $8000 being tax deductible.

Opera Donor Circle

Our opera donors have made an incredible contribution to the Adelaide Festival through supporting Saul in 2017, Hamlet in 2018, The Magic Flute in 2019 and Requiem in 2020.

The inclusion of a major opera as the centrepiece of the Festival has generated attention and excitement locally and nationally, but hallmark productions are expensive to produce and we cannot deliver work of this calibre and breadth without the philanthropic support of the Opera Donor Circle.

Every contribution to the Opera Donor Circle is fully tax deductible.

For more information please contact Sarah Killey, Senior Philanthropy Manager, on philanthropy@adelaidefestival.com.au or 08 8216 4477.
